Putting the New Zealand back in ANZAC…
2008 April 28
After our first ANZAC day in Australia back in 2000, I used to joke with Eddie that most Australians thought ANZAC stood for ’Australians iN Zee Army Corps.’ Seriously, the New Zealand part of aNZac never seemed to be mentioned, and I couldn’t believe the number of people who stared uncomprehendingly when I said that New Zealanders observed ANZAC day too.
So this year, when I heard that a statue of an NZ soldier had been erected on Anzac Bridge in Sydney, and when I heard the New Zealand soldiers mentioned on TV and the radio, I was surprised and had to ask Eddie if I’d heard right. I did hear right, and I’m happy about that.
